about
In 2014, I moved to Harlem to begin working on a MFA writing degree at Columbia University. Since being in the Land of Langston, I've been pleasantly surprised to feel the aftershocks of the energy and history that catalyzed the Renaissance nearly a century before. Setting Langston's words to a rock tune is my way of paying homage to two cultural traditions --punk and poetry--that for me are continually in conversation with souls grown deep. BT chose to reformulate and remix a Hughes "song" for 21st century ears because we recognize that time does not pass but rather accumulates, and even as the future manages to get a word in edgewise, the past keeps talking back.--GA
lyrics
I could take the Harlem night
and wrap around you,
Take the neon lights and make a crown,
Take the Lenox Avenue busses,
Taxis, subways,
And for your love song tone their rumble down.
Take Harlem's heartbeat,
Make a drumbeat,
Put it on a record, let it whirl,
And while we listen to it play,
Dance with you till day--
Dance with you, my sweet brown Harlem girl.
